Invisalign Alternatives: Cheaper Options That Actually Work

Clear aligner tray and 3D dental scan on a tablet at our Bangkok orthodontic clinic

That last sentence is the whole article in one line, so let us prove it. Below you will find every realistic alternative, what each one actually costs in Bangkok, an honest look at mail-order aligners, and a section on when Invisalign genuinely earns its premium. We are an orthodontist-led clinic, not a brand, so we have no tray to defend.

Why people look for an Invisalign alternative

The search almost always starts with a quote. In the US, UK and Australia, Invisalign treatment typically lands somewhere between $3,000 and $7,000 depending on case complexity and where you live. Those are market figures, not our prices, but they match what patients show us at consultation.

Here is what that quote is made of. Part of it pays for the clinical work: the scan, the treatment plan, the appointments, the refinements. Another part pays for the Invisalign brand itself: the licence fees your dentist pays, the lab costs, the marketing that made you search for the name in the first place.

The clinical part is worth paying for. The brand part is negotiable, because the tray is plastic; the treatment plan is the product. Once you see it that way, the alternatives stop looking like compromises and start looking like the same treatment with a different logo.

Other clear aligner brands: the closest swap

If you want the Invisalign experience without the Invisalign invoice, this is the category. ClearCorrect, Spark, Angel Align and a long list of regional brands all work on the same principle Invisalign pioneered:

  • A 3D scan of your teeth
  • A digital treatment plan that sequences the movements
  • A series of thermoformed trays, each moving teeth a fraction of a millimetre
  • Wear time of around 22 hours a day, switching trays every one to two weeks

The materials differ slightly between brands, and marketing departments make a lot of those differences. In day-to-day clinical use, the overlap is far bigger than the gap. For a deeper side-by-side, we wrote a full comparison of Invisalign vs other clear aligners compared.

Why the orthodontist matters more than the brand

Every aligner system, Invisalign included, starts with software proposing a treatment plan. The software is a drafting tool. A human has to decide whether each movement is biologically realistic, where to place attachments, whether the teeth need slimming between them, and in what order the movements should happen.

That human is the variable. A board-certified orthodontist will reject a plan the software says is fine, stage difficult movements differently, and catch a treatment that is drifting off course at month four instead of month fourteen. A general dentist doing occasional aligner cases, or an app with no dentist at all, will not.

This is why we tell patients to stop comparing tray brands and start comparing clinicians. The same case, in the same brand of aligner, gets a different result depending on who planned it. Ask any provider two questions: who plans my case, and what are their orthodontic credentials?

Align Plus in Bangkok: what we use and what it costs

At our clinic in Siam Square, the aligner system we plan and supervise is Align Plus. Pricing follows complexity: a light case correcting minor crowding or spacing starts at 15,000 THB, and a comprehensive full-correction case runs up to 175,000 THB.

In dollars, that is roughly $460 to $5,385, and most mild to moderate cases land well under the top of that range.

Orthodontic consultation in the chair at our Bangkok clinic

Treatment takes 6 to 18 months depending on your case, every plan is designed and monitored by an orthodontist, and the work carries a one-year warranty.

The consultation and scan are free, which matters here: nobody can honestly price your case from a photo, and we would rather show you the number after seeing your teeth. You can see the full details of our clear aligners in Bangkok from 15,000 THB.

One honesty note. We obviously have an interest in this option, since it is the one we provide. That is exactly why the rest of this article covers the options we do not sell, including the cases where they beat aligners altogether.

At-home aligners: the honest state of mail-order in 2026

Mail-order aligners promised the Invisalign result for under $2,000 with no dental visits: take your own impressions at home, receive trays by post, straighten your teeth via an app. It was the cheapest row in every comparison article for years.

Then SmileDirectClub, the biggest name in the category, went bankrupt and shut down, leaving customers mid-treatment with no trays, no refunds and no clinician to call. Plenty of listicles still recommend the category as if that never happened. It happened, and it exposed the structural problem rather than a one-off business failure.

The structural problem is supervision. Studies and dentist reports suggest supervised aligner treatment finishes as planned in over 90 percent of cases, while mail-order completion and satisfaction rates sit meaningfully lower, often cited around 75 to 80 percent. Nobody is watching your roots, your gums or your bite while the trays push.

Before signing up with any remote-only provider, check for these red flags:

  • ❌ No X-ray before treatment, so nobody has checked your roots and bone
  • ❌ No in-person exam, so gum disease and decay go straight into treatment
  • ❌ No mid-course correction, so a plan that drifts just keeps drifting
  • ❌ No named clinician responsible for your case
  • ❌ No answer to "what happens if the company closes mid-treatment?"

Our verdict is blunt: the savings do not cover the cost of redoing a failed treatment, and redoing is the realistic downside. If your case is truly minimal and a dentist has examined you and agreed, fine. As a default path, we cannot recommend it.

Ceramic braces: the underrated alternative

Aligner marketing has been so effective that many patients never consider the option that outperforms aligners on hard cases: fixed braces with tooth-coloured ceramic brackets.

Metal and ceramic braces models side by side, two proven Invisalign alternatives

Braces grip each tooth individually, which lets an orthodontist perform movements aligners struggle with: large rotations of rounded teeth, pulling teeth vertically into position, and closing certain extraction gaps. If your case sits at the complex end, braces are not the budget fallback. They are the better tool.

At our clinic, ceramic braces cost 50,000 to 65,000 THB, roughly $1,540 to $2,000, over a typical 12 to 24 months. Metal braces, the strongest and cheapest option of all, run 35,000 to 50,000 THB, about $1,075 to $1,540. Both carry our one-year warranty. Even at the top of the ceramic range, you are under most Invisalign quotes from home.

The honest constraint: braces need adjustment visits every several weeks, in person. That makes them the natural choice for patients living in Bangkok, expats, students and long-stay visitors, rather than someone flying in for a single week. Aligners travel; brackets need a local orthodontist's chair.

✅ Choose braces if your case is complex, you are in Bangkok long term, or you doubt you would wear trays 22 hours a day. ❌ Skip braces if you need a remote-friendly treatment or your case is mild enough for aligners.

When Invisalign is still worth the money

A comparison article that never concedes anything to Invisalign is a sales page. So here is the concession, honestly made.

Invisalign has the largest case history of any aligner system, a mature ecosystem of attachment designs, and refinement processes polished over millions of cases. For complex cases being treated with aligners rather than braces, that ecosystem can give an experienced provider extra margin.

Some patients also simply want the brand and the reassurance it carries, and that is a legitimate preference to pay for.

Two things to keep in mind if you go that way. First, choose your provider on the orthodontist's credentials, not the shiniest Invisalign tier badge, because the planning problem we described above applies to Invisalign too. Second, the brand premium exists everywhere, including Thailand, though the gap versus home prices narrows abroad.

If you have decided the brand is right for you, our guide to getting Invisalign in Thailand covers what to expect. We do not provide Invisalign ourselves, so consider that guide neutral territory.

What aligners cost in Bangkok vs at home

Here is the angle most alternative lists never mention: you are not limited to your local market's prices. Same treatment concept, different economics.

OptionTypical at-home market priceOur Bangkok price
Invisalign (US/UK/AU market range)~$3,000 to $7,000Not offered; quoted by Invisalign providers
Align Plus clear alignersNot available at home15,000 to 175,000 THB (~$460 to $5,385 / ~£360 to £4,240 / ~AU$700 to AU$8,150)
Ceramic bracesOften $4,000+50,000 to 65,000 THB (~$1,540 to $2,000)
Metal bracesOften $3,000+35,000 to 50,000 THB (~$1,075 to $1,540)

Market figures above are broad, non-contractual ranges for context. Ours are the fees we actually charge.

The obvious objection is logistics: how do you run a months-long treatment from another country? For aligners, more smoothly than you might expect. The consultation, scan and treatment start happen in one Bangkok stay. When the case allows it, we hand over the full series of aligners in one go, so you fly home with your treatment in your luggage.

From there, progress checks run over WhatsApp with photos, and we adjust the plan remotely if something drifts. About 70 percent of our patients are international, mostly from Australia, the UK, Canada and the US, so this rhythm is our normal workflow rather than an exception.

How to choose: a 4-question checklist

Strip away the brand noise and the decision comes down to four questions.

  1. How complex is your case? You cannot grade this from a mirror. Crowding that looks minor can hide root positions that make it complex, and vice versa. Only a scan and an orthodontist's eyes can tell you, which is what a free consultation is for.
  2. Trays or brackets: which will you actually wear? Aligners only work at around 22 hours a day. If you already know you will leave trays in a drawer, braces will beat aligners for you regardless of price.
  3. What is your real all-in budget? Compare final quotes, not starting prices. Include refinements, retainers and, if you are travelling, flights and hotel. Bangkok usually still wins with room to spare, but do the honest maths.
  4. Who is planning your treatment? A board-certified orthodontist, a general dentist, or an app. This one question predicts your result better than any brand name on the box.

If you want to see what the treatment journey looks like end to end before deciding, we cover how clear aligner treatment works in Thailand step by step.

The bottom line on Invisalign alternatives

Invisalign is a good product with a big price tag, and much of that price tag is brand. Other aligner systems move teeth using the same biology and the same planning process, ceramic and metal braces beat aligners outright on complex cases, and mail-order trays are the one alternative we would steer you away from.

Whoever you choose, put the orthodontist's credentials above the logo.

If your case is mild to moderate and you want aligner pricing that makes sense, our orthodontist-planned Align Plus treatment starts at 15,000 THB, with a free consultation and scan to give you an exact quote before you commit to anything.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a cheaper option than Invisalign? Yes. Other aligner brands treat the same cases for less: our Align Plus aligners start at 15,000 THB in Bangkok. Ceramic braces run 50,000 to 65,000 THB and metal braces 35,000 to 50,000 THB. All move teeth with the same biology, without the brand premium.
Are at-home or mail-order aligners safe? We advise caution. Without an X-ray, an in-person exam and ongoing supervision, failure rates are meaningfully higher, and SmileDirectClub's shutdown left customers mid-treatment with no support. If a dentist has examined you and confirmed a truly minimal cosmetic case, the risk is smaller, but supervised treatment remains the safer default.
When are braces better than clear aligners? For severe rotations, vertical corrections, certain extraction cases and other complex movements, fixed braces outperform any aligner brand. They are also the better call if you doubt you would wear trays 22 hours a day. Ceramic brackets keep the look discreet.
Is Invisalign worth the extra money? Sometimes. For complex aligner cases, its mature ecosystem gives experienced providers extra margin, and some patients value the brand itself. For a mild to moderate case planned by a board-certified orthodontist, the result depends on the plan, not the logo on the box.
How long do Invisalign alternatives take? Clear aligners take 6 to 18 months depending on complexity, and ceramic or metal braces take 12 to 24 months. Duration is set by your case, not the brand. The exact number of aligners is confirmed after your scan.
